The 14th Tihany
Symposium will take place in Siófok, a town on the
south coast of Lake Balaton. Having the
largest population among
towns around the lake, Siófok is often referred to as the capital of
the Lake
Balaton. Located in
the Transdanubian
region of Hungary, Lake Balaton is the largest lake in Central Europe
and one
of its foremost tourist destinations. Siófok, a charming little town is
one of
the most popular holiday resorts in Hungary,
which
could preserve a village-like style despite urbanization. The
population is
around 35,000 people but in the summer season there is another 200,000
people
being on vacation at the same time. The name of the city means Cape Sió
(Sió is
a river connecting the Lake with river Danube).
Its harbour has opened
up for traffic in 1864 with the reception of
the first side-wheeler called Kisfaludy steamboat. Visitors can see
boats from
the 19th century even nowadays. Besides, Siófok has the busiest port of
the
lake. Parks with diverse flora turn the city even more colourful and
attractive. You can find a colourful rose garden in shore followed by
huge
sycamores, which create a special atmosphere.
